New Normal Story: Toyota Restarts Mississippi Vehicle Plant

“Toyota’s announcement that it will resume construction of a car factory in Mississippi was a much-needed piece of good news for both the state struggling with persistent unemployment and the automaker trying to recover some goodwill after a recall crisis bruised its reputation.” Read the Seattle Times story on the restart of the Tupelo, MS plant, which Toyota started to build a few years back and put on hold when the economy tanked. By the way, my sister and her family live in the Tupelo area, so I have a firsthand view of this situation.

I describe this situation as a triple crown (from the horse racing industry) where US region (South) is pitted against US region (North/Midwest), where a foreign producer is pitted against a US company, and non-union workers are pitted against unionized workers. Don’t you love the “new normal?”
